Blog Post #5

1.    I chose to look at the ELA standards for first grade. As a result, the standards that were provided were ones that we as students have been trained to learn and use throughout our academic life. The standard I chose to look into describes the different uses of technology such as glossary, table of contents, different menus, etc. The students need to be able to look at an online text and know how to use these tools. I believe this is an important tool to learn as it will become very helpful for assignments and studying as they get older. As I have used these skills for many years, I am confident in my knowledge and understanding to implement this into my classroom.
2.    When looking at all of the different educator toolkits, I chose to use the resource of a science tutorial to learn about all of your body parts and how they function. I feel that this resource is very helpful to lead a class discussion because as second graders, they are becoming more curious about their body and it is an important time to start learning about it. This website provided a descriptive video that visually explained the body and how each piece of the body has a responsibility. I liked how it provided practice questions in between lessons so you can see if the class understands before moving on. I would use this as a part of a lesson plan. In my classroom, I would add some sort of worksheet after to make sure they remember the information provided to them.
3.    As a teacher, I would like to use the app remind. It is essentially a form of communication between the teacher and parent or student. This was first introduced to me in my Junior year of high school. Many of my teachers used this as a form of communication once we were out of school. As kids, we rarely checked our email, but were always on our phone. This was a way for them remind us of upcoming test, assignments or activities happening that week at school. You could set it up to come to your phone as a text. I found it to be very helpful and I would like to continue to use this tool. Another aspect of this app that I liked was that you could reach out to the administrator of the class. Therefore, if you had any questions you could quickly receive a reply. To this day, I have teachers from high school who still communicate with alumni through this app!
I have attached the link to the website that talks about this application and the benefits a little more. https://www.remind.com/

  1. I love CPALMS's science lessons! There are so many awesome lessons, tutorials, and other resources on that site! I haven't even looked at anatomy lessons, but I'm sure they're really interesting and fun.
As you noted in your comment on my blog, it is interesting that we both thought of Remind (Remind 101, back in my day) as a good Web 2.0 tool. It is such a great method of communication for teachers, and I'm surprised at how few from my school actually use it. And your teachers communicate with alumni with it? That's cool!

  2. Hayley,
I love to see the diversity in the ages we chose for the Standards! it is also really great that you mentioned some of the things you feel qualified for, it helps me to understand why you feel this way.
I also loved the CPALMS resource you chose! being a pre-nursing major i think it is really important for younger students to begin to understand their bodies and how they function, it will definitely help them out as they start to grow up!
I also saw that you chose Remind! i have seen a few people suggest it and that just shows how useful it would be! great job!

  3. Hayley, I really enjoyed reading your blog post this week! I am glad that you feel confident in teaching first graders how to identify/ use tools related to an online text. When I was in high school, many of my teachers used Remind as well! I definitely think that remind is more useful for older students, or, maybe Remind can be used to keep in contact with parents of younger students. For example, in a Kindergarden classroom, students would not need to receive text updates; however, it would be very helpful and convenient for parents to receive.

  4. I also chose first grade! The glossary and index is a very important tool to understand how to use, even with an online textbook. I have actually used the Remind app and I love it! I used it in high school and it saved me. I completely forgot about this tool, but it can be very helpful. With phones becoming more popular at a younger age, this would be a great tool to utilize. Great job!

  5. Hi! I love your idea for using the remind app in your classroom as I similarly talked about that in my blog post. I've always found the app to be a useful tool to communicate important information. I also like your idea for using the science tutorial to learn about the different body parts as using visualizations for this specific topic could be the most beneficial to students. Good job!
